Ceylon Versus Cassia Cinnamon

September 15, 2026 · 4 min read

Not all cinnamon is the same. The type matters for safety.

Two main types

Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) is sometimes called true cinnamon. Cassia is the common supermarket type.

Coumarin

Cassia contains more coumarin, which may cause or worsen liver problems in large amounts. Ceylon contains much less.

Blood sugar evidence

Trial results are conflicting, and a 2012 Cochrane review found insufficient evidence for diabetes, according to the NCCIH.

In GlycoZen

The seller names Ceylon cinnamon, with no amount published.
