Berberine is a plant alkaloid found in barberry, goldenseal and Oregon grape.
What the NIH says
The NIH’s NCCIH says there is weak evidence that berberine might help with blood sugar control.
Side effects
Mild to moderate nausea, diarrhea, bloating and constipation are the most common.
Interactions
It can add to metformin and interact with medicines processed by liver enzymes. Ask your pharmacist.
Who should avoid it
Pregnant or nursing women and young children should not use it. Ask your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease.
